Man killed while walking down Coastal Highway south of Dewey
Taylor GoebelA pedestrian was killed early Friday morning in a car crash south of Dewey Beach, state police say.
At about 12:30 a.m., a 56-year-old Lewes man was driving northbound on Coastal Highway in a 2012 Hyundai Accent in the right lane near the intersection of Keybox Road.
The pedestrian, from Maryland, was walking on the northbound side near that intersection when he, for unknown reasons, walked directly into the Hyundai's path, according to state police.
The Lewes man was unable to move out of the way and struck the pedestrian, who was later pronounced dead at the scene by responding EMS, according to state police.
The roadway was dark and the pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk or carrying a light when he was struck. Alcohol and unsafe speed were not deemed factors on behalf of the driver, nor did alcohol appear to be a contributing factor for the pedestrian.

The driver was properly restrained and sustained no injuries from the crash.
The northbound lanes of Coastal Highway were closed for about four hours Friday morning while the crash was investigated and cleared, according to state police.
