A Delmar man faces charges after a Millsboro crash that state police said sent multiple people to the hospital, including three children, one with serious injuries.

Around 5:10 p.m. Saturday, Delaware State Police said 38-year-old James N. Cannon was driving a 2009 GMC Sierra pick-up truck that was stopped at a stop sign on Townsend Road at the intersection with Mt. Joy Road.

A 34-year-old Milford man, who had the right of way, drove his 2007 Toyota Highlander through the intersection from Mt. Joy Road, according to police. However, Cannon pulled out into the Toyota's path, causing the two vehicles to collide.

Police said the Toyota's driver as well as a 6-year-old passenger and an 18-month-old passenger were taken to Beebe Hospital to be treated for injuries that were not life threatening. A 4-year-old passenger was treated at Al DuPont Hospital for Children for serious injuries.

Cannon along with a 34-year-old female passenger in his truck were also transported to Beebe Hospital with injuries that were not life threatening. A second passenger was uninjured, according to police.

Further investigation revealed that alcohol impairment was a factor for Cannon in the crash, police said. After he was discharged from the hospital, he was charged with first-degree vehicular assault, four counts of second-degree vehicular assault, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to remain stopped at a stop sign and driving suspended.

He is being held in the Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of $8,600 secured bail.
