A video posted to Assateague Island National Seashore’s Facebook page Sept. 2 gave visitors an important reminder: the island’s horses are wild and unpredictable.

The video shows a lifeguard trying to make the horse move away from a cooler on the beach. He is banging objects together to make noise, then he moves behind the horse, which bucks and kicks him three times in the legs and torso.

The guard had only minor abrasions after the incident, according to the park.

Park spokesperson Liz Davis said even though what happened wasn't a typical day at Assateague, the incident's spread over social media has given them a chance to own the situation and learn from it. Safely storing food is a huge issue at the park. While an animal raiding a campsite is annoying to beachgoers it is harmful to ponies, who eat the plastic as well as the food.

The park is looking for more ways to prevent the situation in the first place, Davis said.

The park provided the following tips to avoid an unpleasant interaction with the animals:

• Please do not make food or water available to the horses.

• When possible, keep food safely stored in a vehicle. If food must be brought to the beach, store it in a sturdy zippered bag or in a cooler that is secured shut with a strap.

• Give the horses their space. Move at least a bus length away when a horse approaches. Do not try to save your belongings; wait until the horse is out of the area.

• Wild horses communicate. Watch for pinned ears and sudden movements, as they indicate agitation that can lead to kicking and biting.
