4 charged with 14 fishing violations in Ocean City

Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police reported Monday that an undercover investigation in Ocean City has resulted in multiple charges and court dates for four Virginia fishermen.

Acting on tips from the public, officers conducted a plainclothes operation the night of Oct. 29 at the U.S. Route 50 bridge in Ocean City. They issued 14 citations to four Virginia men for possession of undersized striped bass, exceeding the daily catch limit of striped bass and possession of undersized red drum, police said.

Humberto Oscar Alfaro Ventura, 43, of Woodbridge, Cesar Isair Callejas Melendez, 19 of Manassas, Cruz Emilio Umena Chinchalla, 43, of Manassas and Antonio Leonel Ramirez Riyan, 31 of Herndon, are scheduled to appear before Worcester County District Court in January.

The men face more than $2,200 in fines. Officers seized 27 striped bass and two red drum.

DNR Police donated the fish to local shelters.
