Popular Ocean City events back for another year

Crab soup and classic cars are set to hit Ocean City this spring and summer after the Town Council approved a series of events for the coming season.

The returning events, including the OC Air Show, were approved at a Town Council meeting on Monday, Feb. 6.

The Crab Soup Cook-Off, formerly approved for May 13, 2017 and May 12, 2018, will be held again on May 11, 2019. Presented by Lisa Aydelotte of the Ocean City Downtown Association, the event will pit Ocean City's best crab and cream of crab soups against each other, with attendees voting on a winner. Held at Somerset Street Plaza, the event will take place between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Also coming in 2017 is the return of Cruisin' OC, to take place Thursday, May 18, through Sunday, May 21. The event, approved through 2018, has proven to be a big winner for the town. Taxes collected during the weekend in 2016 came in at $195,317 for the resort town, with $176,843 coming from lodging. Total revenue in the town during Cruisin' cames to $3,929,845 in lodging, $1,387,030 in food and beverages and $576,936 in amusements.

Finally approved by the council are a series of events from Play It Safe Events, an advocate against drug and alcohol abuse. These events, aimed at youth and graduates at risk of addiction, include beach volleyball and karaoke on the beach Tuesday, June 6 and 13, three on three basketball Wednesday, June 7 and 14, dodge ball Thursday June 1, 8 and 15, tennis Friday, June 2, 9 and 16 and karaoke on the beach Sunday, June 4 and 11.

The OC Air Show, meanwhile, will take fight Saturday, June 17, through Sunday, June 18.
