67-pound tuna takes over lead at White Marlin Open Day 2

DELMARVANOW STAFF REPORT
A 67 pound tuna is suspended from a rope at the Harbour Island Marina during the White Marlin Open on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017.

A 67-pound tuna caught off Blue Runner out of Manasquan, New Jersey, stands atop the White Marlin Open leaderboard after second day of fishing.

Angler James Boynton will stand to gain $460,000 if his tuna remains on top of the leaderboard.

On a day when heavy seas and overcast skies kept most boats out of water, only 19 set out for a chance to reel in an award-winning catch.

This was in sharp contrast with the 136 of 353 registered boats that fished on the opening day of what is billed as “the largest billfish tournament” in the world.

Blue Runner rolled into Harbour Marina with five tuna in the final hour of weigh-in Tuesday, Aug. 8.

Only two of the five tuna were weighed with the first, caught by angler James Keely, tipping the scales at 60 pounds to land at third place on the overall leaderboard.

The tournament’s namesake white marlin remained elusive during the first two day.
