Early morning hit-and-run leaves 21-year-old woman in critical condition

Ocean City police  are investigating an early morning hit-and-run collision that left a 21-year-old bicyclist in critical condition early Wednesday morning.

According to a police release, at about 3 a.m., in the area of Second Street and Philadelphia Avenue, the female bicyclist — an exchange student from Slovakia, who was not named  — was riding south on Philadelphia Avenue when she was struck by an SUV heading the same direction.

The driver failed to stop after the collision, according to the release, and the victim was transported by Ocean City emergency personnel to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, where she remains in critical condition.

Following a “thorough investigation,” Ocean City police officers identified a suspect and are consulting with the Worcester County State’s Attorney’s Office, according to the release.

The suspect’s identity will be released at a later time, according to the release.
