A Snow Hill man has been charged in the death of a 21-year-old bicyclist in a hit-ran-run collision Aug. 30 in Ocean City.

Ocean City Police said detectives identified Brooks T. Bratten, 38, as the suspect in the hit-and-run in the area of 2nd Street and Philadelphia Avenue.

The victim, Veronika Badurova, 21, of Slovakia, died at Peninsula Regional Medical Center on Sept. 1, due to injuries sustained during the collision.

Bratten has been charged with two counts of failure to remain at the scene of a fatal traffic collision, two counts of failure to remain at the scene of a traffic collision causing bodily injury, failing to render aid following a traffic collision and negligent driving, police said in a news release.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Badurova was riding her bicycle southbound on Philadelphia Avenue when she was struck by an SUV traveling southbound driven by Bratten, police said.

Bratten failed to stop after the collision, according to police, and Badurova was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The death of the student brought support of a local business that J-1 students frequently visit.

On Sunday, the Alibi Room on Baltimore Avenue in Ocean City held a fundraiser to help Badurova’s family.

The Alibi Room raised $700, which Tippett said would be passed directly to Badurova’s family to pay for expenses.
