Ocean City offers free bicycle lights to increase road safety

DELMARVA NOW STAFF REPORT

Ocean City is again offering free bicycle lights to residents and visitors as part of its efforts to prevent accidents on town roads.

Residents and visitors can bring their bicycles to the police department on 65th Street or any of the five fire stations in town to get free lights installed, a news release said.

The bicycle lights project builds on the success of an Ocean City Police Department effort in March, which the town said received “overwhelmingly positive feedback.”

This service is just one effort to make Ocean City a more bicycle-friendly community and a safer community overall, said Councilmember Tony DeLuca.

“We are excited to have received a generous grant from the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore,” DeLuca said.

“The generosity of our community has resulted in the purchase of nearly 500 free bicycle lights for residents, visitors and our J-1 students. We strongly believe that having properly equipped bicycles will reduce the number of bicycle collisions that occur in Ocean City, making it safer for drivers and bicyclists.”

Along with the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, funding for the bike lights has come from the Ocean City Hotel Motel Restaurant Association and Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Association.

Bicycle lights will be available at the City Hall gazebo on Wednesdays from May 16 through June 27, from approximately 10 a.m. until noon. You can also  bring your bicycle to one of the designated locations — the Public Safety Building and the Ocean City Fire Department stations — to get the lights installed.
