The historic Lankford Hotel in Ocean City has been put up for sale for $16 million.

Built in 1924 by Mary B. Quillen, the Lankford Hotel has been a staple on the Ocean City Boardwalk for decades. Throughout its history, the hotel management has remained within the original family.

But the future of the hotel appears to be uncertain after the property was listed for sale by Coldwell Banker on Nov. 30.

The main hotel sits on the Boardwalk facing the ocean, located at 801-805 Atlantic Avenue near 8th Street in Ocean City. The property also includes the Ayresbuilt, which has nine apartments; the Sea Robin, which has three floors and two apartments; and the Lankford Lodge, which has two apartments and 11 rooms.

In all, the property encompasses 43,222 square feet and has about 53 rental units. The sale also includes six commercial storefront properties, both on the Boardwalk level and below the Boardwalk.

The current owners of the Lankford Hotel could not be immediately reached Sunday for comment on the sale.

Over the years the Lankford Hotel has been in Ocean City, it has endured many changes and challenges. In 1962, the hotel stayed standing after the town was hit by a hurricane, according to the hotel's website.

More recently, in 2013, the Lankford Hotel was featured on the Travel Channel's "Hotel Impossible." Experts from the show came to Ocean City to help identify where the hotel needed improvements, per the website.

After receiving help from "Hotel Impossible," the Lankford Hotel updated its reservation system technology and refreshed the design and furnishings throughout the property, according to the website.
