The Town of Cape Charles has begun the process of dredging and beach placement starting at the north end of the beach near Jefferson Avenue and proceeding southward. About 30,000 cubic yards of dredge material will fill in an area of around 600 feet.

The process will take six to 10 days to complete and if all goes as planned will begin this evening, said Mike Kay of Cottrell Contracting in Chesapeake, Virginia.

According to a notice on the Town of Cape Charles website, “the sand fill will likely have an organic odor at the time of initial placement” that should dissipate in time. Locals have expressed concern over the timing of the dredge before Labor Day, the last big weekend of the summer for the tourist town.

"It's part of a federal project and the time frame was determined by the Army Corps of Engineers," said Larry DiRe, town planner. "The folks that are out there at the beach now seem to be coping just fine."
