Mourning the loss of 'Dutch' Daulton

As I sit here, throwing back a few beers at 2:45 a.m., Wednesday morning, I am mourning the loss of my great Phillies friend Darren "Dutch" Daulton.

I got to know "Dutch" throughout my 42 years as a Phillies full-season ticket holder. Dutch was a great guy, the tears are streaming down my face right now.

I will be going to Alumni Night this Saturday, Aug. 12 — minus Pete Rose.

Dutch always called me "brother." Well, Dutch, I love you, brother.

So no Dallas Green, no Jim Bunning, no "Dutch." It will be the saddest Alumni Night I have ever attended.

Love ya, "Dutch." And to hell with Pete Rose.

Find good use for Boxwood plant

Every day I drive by the vacant GM property and wonder if that large installation could be used for a truly unique and highly purposeful pathway to someone’s recovery.

Why not form a public-private partnership between the state and Christiana Care to build a low-level offender prison tied into a comprehensive rehabilitation center? There certainly is enough acreage, security and parking to accommodate both medical and prison structures, and even some short-term housing could be erected for addicts and family members who need supervision but who will eventually become productive again.

The homeless who even now wander the local neighborhoods could have someplace to go for care or evaluation. Let’s think outside the Box(wood)!

Grateful for Wilmington Hospital

I was recently admitted to Wilmington Hospital by the 911 route, and I must tell my side of the outstanding, swift, emergency care I received and my consequent stay.

I was in and out of it during the first day or two — yet I knew there was activity about me to get me stable. Subsequently, I was moved to the ICU step-down Unit 6 South-16.

Thank you is not sufficient to the nursing staff, techs and anyone who entered my room. I was attended to by male/female nurses — techs of all races and ethnicity.

The warmth and concerned display were apparent, and one could feel the humanity of it all.

I cannot remember all the names — hence, I will not mention any at this point. They know who they are/were.

Yes, I found a gem in the city of the Diamond State. The Wilmington Hospital.

Smart to join climate alliance

Thank you, Gov. John Carney, for supporting action to tackle global climate change by joining the United Climate Alliance. The United Climate Change Alliance was organized after the current administration left the Climate Paris Agreement.

We are a low-lying state with a proportionally large coastline. The United Climate Alliance aims to reduce emissions by 26-28% from 2005 levels and move toward clean power.

As we move in this direction, we are tackling climate change at the local level and cleaning up the air here in Delaware.

Though Delaware is small both in size and population, we can make a difference by joining forces with other states. I’d like to see policies that both reduce carbon emissions and create jobs here in Delaware.

America deteriorating under Trump

The state of this country has deteriorated under Trump. The Republican leadership has become profoundly uncaring, as evidenced by its failed health care bill, which would have put millions off the rolls and given tax breaks to the wealthy.

It is complicit in the encouragement of racism, class warfare, religious bigotry, voter suppression and more.

It has shaped itself to appeal to Americans who want authoritarian leaders, nationalist policies and less government regulation. These followers are in turn driving the party to become more extreme.

Let’s examine what is not normal: Never revealing finances; many conflicts of interest, appointing people who have lied about their background or omitted crucial information on disclosure forms; violating the emoluments clause; using his office to enrich himself and family; inability to handle classified information; lies daily about everything; self-confessed sexual predator and proven con man in business; and lastly, diminishing the office of president to fit himself.

Fear is a great motivator and has been used to great success. Anxiety and resentment made many white voters support Donald Trump because of their belief that they were losing ground to black people and because he promised to “MAGA.”

The facts support just the opposite; in 60 years the wages of blacks still lag behind those of whites. Facts, alternative or otherwise mean little to this administration.
