Rehoboth needs recycling

I moved up from Florida and visited Rehoboth Beach. I was surprised there were no recycle cans on the boardwalk, at any food concessions, anywhere.

One might think that, by 2017, a community which prides itself on its progressive nature would show more initiative. This lack of effort shows little respect for Mother Nature.

There are poor towns in distraught regions of our great country who have not benefited as well from the American Dream that still provide a public recycling can. For those who care, there is money to be made from recycling.

And even if there were none to be made, so what? Beach businesses make a profit from high-priced rooms and mark up even the fast food items. Consumers spend countless dollars for all sorts of non-essentials with no complaints.

When you consider over 19 billion tons of plastic garbage wind up in our oceans each year, destroying sea life, a recycling commitment is the least one can do to demonstrate good stewardship. It's time for beach dwellers to provide the leadership that can preserve our waters for future generations.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

Medicare for all makes sense

I have just read Carol Paris' opinion on making Medicare our national health care program.

Ever since this debate on the Affordable Care Act began, it has been my thought that all of those in the ACA should be put under Medicaid, but, having read Ms. Paris' article, I am strongly in favor of her organization's proposal to put everyone under Medicare.

Having been on Medicare now for about 20 years, I find it so easy to use. While it doesn't do all that I wish it did, it is still a great plan.

Ms. Paris' organization's plan is so simple, but then politicians have to make everything twice as difficult as it has to be.

The South didn't declare the Civil War

I was surprised to see Professor Reed's comment "The Civil War was the result of the secession of 11 Southern states." This is wrong in two ways.

The original secession was of seven Southern states, including South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Flordia, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.

This did not automatically lead to the Civil War. The Civil War commenced only when President Lincoln decided that there would be a civil war. He could have decided to let the seven states go their own way without a civil war.

The remaining four states (Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas) joined the Confederacy only after the Civil War had begun.

I have decided to award Dr. Reed a B- for his article.

Put DACA recipients to work

I'm sure someone has mentioned this before or some bright light in Washington or the illegal (let's at least start with reality and fact) immigrant community has already begun this discussion, but I haven't seen it yet: Let those on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program gain citizenship and avoid release to their country of origin by performing some term of identifiable public service for the U.S.

The possibilities are practically endless. Harvey reconstruction. International or domestic Peace Corps-type work. Military service. Swamp draining in DC. Medical care or educational support, particularly for the informed and disadvantaged.

Duration? Figure something out, but it doesn't have to be a normal two-year draft. Credit for time already spent (e.g. already serving in the mitilary)?  Probably, absolutely. Contract for future service for those now in school? Sure.

For a "Dreamer" who doesn't think a stint of U.S. service is worth the "cost" of citizenship? Pax vobiscum and good bye.

Get mosquitoes under control

We need mosquito control here in New Castle County. No one has responded to our requests.

I let my grandkids out today and in less than 10 minutes they were covered with them. Please help.
