Ocean City's White Marlin Open: A whale of a tourney

Cheryl McLeskey's 94-pound white marlin from 2015 was the third largest in tournament history.

At the White Marlin Open, the bigger the fish, the bigger the prize.

In the world’s largest billfish tournament, there are many opportunities to win in multiple categories.

During the past year Jim Motsko, president of the tournament, spoke with captains and other fishermen about how to improve the tournament.

“In previous years, the minimum length and weight for blue marlin was 120 inches long and minimum weight of 500 pounds,” Motsko said. “We talked with captains and we decided to do it in length this year with a minimum of 114 inches long, and after that weight takes over.”

To help with the measurement, a new tool will be distributed to fisherman as well, Motsko said.

“The tool is a long banner measuring device that is placed in the water and gives us a pretty good idea of length,” Motsko said. “It’s much easier to measure and get the measurement correct.”

Last year, about 300 boats competed in the tournament, with about 2,000 participants. This year, Motsko believes there will be at least 325 boats and more than 2,500 participants.

“It’s pure competition,” Motsko said. “We have some of the best boats competing.”

Whether competitors are on a small or large boat, the competition comes down to one thing: luck.

“The draw that makes us popular is having the heaviest fish requires luck,” Motsko said. “Anyone can catch a large fish and win. They have a large playing ground, and if it’s yours and you happen to be fishing in the event, you could win a lot of money.”

The tourney has become a tradition and something that many look forward to year after year.

“This is the highlight of the fishing community and Ocean City as well,” Motsko said.
