Passing storms have hindered flounder fishing at the Old Grounds. Most boats aren’t venturing far away from shore until the seas calm down. Before the nasty conditions ... Anglers were catching sea bass at the Del-Jersey-Land reef on squid, and bluefish at the Fenwick Shoal on spoons. Anglers are catching snapper blues at the Indian River Inlet on metal lures, as well as a few keeper rockfish at night on bucktails. In the surf, most of the action has been from small bluefish. Snapper blues are fun to catch on a small rod, hopefully, the big ones that were here in May come back before it gets cold.
Slot season has ended for rockfish, but a few were caught in the upper bay, however, nothing over 28 inches was reported. White perch and catfish have been caught in the upper reaches of the Delaware Bay this week at Woodland Beach and Augustine Beach. Anglers are using bloodworms for the white perch, and bunker for the catfish.
Labor Day weekend didn’t have the best fishing weather, however myself with the crew of Jessica Byrne, Andrew Houser, and Ryan Kapocsi still made it out. We fished the Delaware River at couple rock jetties, however, strong winds made it difficult to fish. Instead of striking out we tried our luck in the Brandywine River. The action declined in the Brandywine since last week likely due to Saturday’s rain. Kapocsi did hook up with a monster musky on a bucktail, but the fish broke off as I reached for it with the net. The musky appeared bigger than the 37-inch one I caught the week before. It wasn’t until we hit the Christina River where we found the rockfish. Each of us got in on the action catching multiple rockfish with the largest measuring close to 25 inches. We were using bucktails and storm shads. All the fish were released and swam away healthy. Anglers fishing for white perch in the Christina found luck at the Newport boat ramp using nightcrawlers.
Most ponds were filled with mud from Saturday’s rain and weren’t helped out by Wednesday’s weather either. Anglers were catching largemouth at Lums Pond, and Garrisons Lake before the rain.
