The NFL is showing Bears kicker Cody Parkey some sympathy.

He’s become the most hated player in Chicago after he missed the potential game-winning field goal against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, but the league’s official statistics will show that the miss wasn’t his fault.

The kick will officially go down as a blocked kick because Eagles defensive lineman Treyvon Hester appears to get his fingertips on the ball.

After winning a game of inches; Eagles have a lot of ground to make up vs. Saints

It’s impossible to tell how much Hester’s tip affected the path of the ball, but the kick was just inches away from clearing the posts, so any disruption at all could have been the difference between a win and a loss.

The changed statistic isn’t going to salvage Parkey’s reputation among Bears fans, but maybe it can help him sleep a little better at night.
