Michael Vick (2) warms up before playing the Baltimore Ravens at Heinz Field in 2015.

Former National Football League star Michael Vick was on the Eastern Shore in April and June to promote and hammer out details for a youth football camp that he wanted to host on the Eastern Shore.

First the camp was going to be at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, then it was moved to Cambridge South Dorchester High School. Questions arose about whether or not the camp would actually happen.

As it turns out, it won't.

"The camp is cancelled," said Darnell Clash, a CSD graduate and president of the camp. "(There) wasn't enough kids participating."

The Maryland Eastern Shore All-Star Football Camp was supposed to be aimed at teaching children ages eight to 18 about proper strength and conditioning techniques, football fundamentals, nutrition education and the x's and o's of football. The camp was to be run from Friday, July 8 through Sunday, July 9 and costs per-camper ranged from $149 to $229 per-camper.

Clash said that he has already refunded money to the campers that did sign up.

Vick was the celebrity associated with the camp, but it was being directed by Clash — a 1980 graduate of Cambridge-South Dorchester who played college football at the University of Wyoming. He then played professionally in the Canadian Football League, then briefly for the New Orleans Saints of the NFL.

"We are already working on (a camp for next year)," Clash said. "(We're) trying to have it as a sponsored camp so it will be free for the kids to come out."

Clash said that he needed at least 150 kids to sign up for the camp, but only 42 had registered as of Tuesday, July 5.

On a side note, a documentary presented by Bleacher Report, "VICK" will premiere on July 11.

The 36-year-old spent last season playing with the Pittsburgh Steelers and is currently a free agent. Vick is a four-time pro bowler and was selected as the 2010 Comeback Player of the Year. He has recorded the most rushing yards of any quarterback in NFL history.

“I thought the Eastern Shore was a beautiful area. Very nice, quiet and scenic. I’ve stopped in Ocean City a few times," Vick said in an interview with The Daily Times in April. “I just thought it would be a nice place to have a football camp.”
