OCEAN

Tautog fishing has started to pick up at reef sites 10, and 11, but the main action for boaters has been sea bass. Dave, and Bob Klinger loaded up on sea bass at site 11. The bass are also hitting in numbers at the Del-Jersey-Land Reef site. For anglers searching for keeper rockfish, the best bet has been the Indian River Inlet at night with bucktails. Bluefish are also taking lures at the Inlet during the day. Surf anglers are still waiting for the Fall run of stripers, but in the meantime bluefish continue to chase bait fish in the surf. Mullet has been the most effective bait. For those that can’t wait for the stripers, the action is still hot in New Jersey. From Holgate to Cape May anglers are catching keeper rockfish.

DELAWARE BAY

White perch fishing has not showed any signs of slowing in the upper bay. Patty at Captain Bones reported white perch, catfish, and short stripers hitting from Augustine Beach down to Woodland Beach on bunker and bloodworms. There are also good reports of white perch at Port Mahon hitting on bloodworms. Keeper-sized rockfish are being caught in the upper bay, but these fish are mostly residents. The migrating schools still making their way toward Delaware from New Jersey. Most of the big rockfish are being caught at the mouths of Delaware Bay tributaries on bloodworms and surface lures. Tog fishing at the Outer Wall and Ice Breakers is still worth the trip, tog are also being reported as far north as Bowers Beach. Green crabs, and Asian box crabs have been the best bait for tog, but anglers are also connecting with blackfish on sand fleas.

RIVERS

There are still plenty of trout left in White Clay Creek. I pulled two rainbows from Thompson’s bridge in Pike Creek on earthworms. Taylored Tackle in Seaford reported good striper action in the Nanticoke river, however all of the action has been on the Maryland side.

PONDS

Ed Raymond checked in with Captain Bones after catching two largemouth bass weighing around four pounds at Derby Pond near Woodside on a jig, and also a stick bait. He also caught several small pickerel and crappie on jigs and minnows. Barb and Mike Trexler fished McGinnis Pond in Kent County and pulled in multiple bluegills and white perch on minnows. George and Bob Grove had a successful day bass fishing at Garrisons Lake in Cheswold. They were catching largemouth bass on whopper ploppers.
