OCEAN

Freezing temperatures have kept most anglers inside. The Indian River Inlet has been quiet this week. Most anglers have returned from the Inlet empty handed. No catches were reported from the surf this week either.

DELAWARE BAY

Anglers in search of keeper rockfish have had luck at the mouth of the Delaware Bay trolling mojo’s, however, nothing is guaranteed. Tyler Nonn of Tidewater charters is having luck on stripers in the Chesapeake Bay near Tangier Island. Most stripers are 36-plus inches. Anglers fishing the Delaware Bay from shore are doing well on white perch with bloodworms as the preferred bait.

RIVERS

Mike Bowen of Eastern Marine reported walleye in the 20-inch range along with stripers at Conowingo dam in Maryland. The walleye are hitting on Rapala minnows, and 4-5 inch grubs on a jig head. Bowen also reported flathead catfish are biting in the Susquehanna. Charlie Lind and Larry Wilson found schools of yellow perch at the grass beds on the Susquehanna River near Perryville ranging from 10-12 inches. They were using worms on top bottom rigs. White perch are still biting at Battery Park on the Delaware River. Most catches have been on bloodworms. Trout at White Clay Creek seem to have been caught up. I had a few nibbles on earthworms, however, that could’ve been from a small rockbass.

PONDS

Ponds are beginning to see thin layers of ice, but not all anglers were thwarted by the cold. Edward Thornton checked in with Patty at Captain Bones Bait & Tackle with a 1-pound, 6-ounce crappie that he caught at Garrisons Lake on a minnow. Ed Raymond found action at Derby Pond. He caught a 4-pound, 2-ounce pickerel on a stick bait, and also reeled in a 4-pound largemouth on a crankbait.
