Large sharks are biting the bait in Delaware waters

OCEAN

Russ Howe went out on the Fish Whisper Charters at an ocean wreck this week. The crew hauled in 84 sea bass with the biggest weighing up to 3-pounds, two long cod, and a 5-pound tog that was released. They were using squid and clams. The Grizzly and Katydid are finding flounder at various ocean structures. Flounder reports have been coming from the Old Grounds, and Reef Sites 10, and 11. Chris Mohn landed a 6-pound 7-ounce and a 5-pound 15-ounce flounder at the Old Grounds on white gulp. Yellowfin tuna are showing up at Poormans Canyon. Steve Parseghian caught two tuna at Poormans. Captain Len Karpen of the charter boat FOMO went out to the Hotdog where angler Nick Campbell pulled in a 130-pound Mako. The shark was weighed in at the Lewes Harbour Marina and was the first of the season weighed in at Lewes Harbour. Fishing at the Indian River Inlet has slowed down with just a few rockfish being caught at night on sand fleas. Dustin Williams had an interesting catch at the Inlet. He caught a 21 ½ inch red drum using a jig tipped with white gulp. He also landed a keeper flounder. Anglers fishing the surf had luck on a few kingfish and bluefish using cut bait, and bloodworms.

DELAWARE BAY

A lot of short rockfish are being caught in the upper bay. Beginning July 1 anglers can keep rockfish measuring between 20-25 inches. Bloodworm has been the bait of choice at the Cape Henlopen fishing pier with kingfish and spot showing up. A few flounder have been caught from the pier as well on minnows. Flounder have also been caught at Reef Sites 6, 7, 8 and at Bowers Beach. Anglers are reporting a decent amount of kingfish being caught at the Broadkill Slough on bloodworms. Harvey Straughn and Jim Frazier fished Woodland Beach with bloodworms and peelers and hooked into several nice size white perch, and short stripers.

RIVERS

Flounder continue to be caught from the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal and Broadkill River on minnows, and squid. Abby Kuhn brought in an 18-inch flounder to the Lewes Harbour Marina that she caught in the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. She was using minnows. Luke Stum netted a citation 7-pound flatty in the canal.

PONDS

‘Take a Kid Fishing!’ DNREC invites budding anglers age 6 through 15 to come out and learn to fish with a parent/guardian on two upcoming dates. The events take place July 13 at Silver Lake in Dover from 5-7:30 p.m., and also July 15 at Redden State Forest in Georgetown from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Captain Bones reported decent largemouth bass and crappie fishing at Noxontown Pond, and Garrisons Lake. Anglers have been using minnows, and jigs for crappie, and frogs, senkos, and whopper ploppers for bass.
