OCEAN

Flounder fishing at the Old Grounds is steadily improving. Anglers are jigging bucktails tipped with squid to lure the flatties off of structure. Flounder fishing is also improving at Site 10. John Davis stopped back at the Lewes Harbour Marina after catching three flounder, and two sea bass at Site 10. He was using jigs tipped with clam, squid, and shiners. Anglers are catching a few keeper sea bass at the Del-Jersey-Land Reef Site. Bluefish, along with a few Spanish mackerel, have been caught by anglers trolling along the Fenwick Island wrecks. From the surf, anglers are catching a few bluefish on bunker.

DELAWARE BAY

Triggerfish are still being caught at the Inner and Outer Walls with peeler crab and sand fleas working the best. A few spadefish were caught alongside the triggerfish. Anglers are seeing nice size sheepshead at the Ice Breakers. Joe Fenstermaker weighed in a citation 8-pound, 9-ounce sheepshead at the Lewes Harbour Marina that he caught at the Breakers on a sand flea. Bill Fintel also fished the Ice Breakers and caught a 10-pound, 8-ounce citation sheepshead along with three triggerfish. Anglers targeting white perch at Port Mahon have been busy catching fish using bloodworms as the bait of choice. Keeper croaker have yet to show up to the Cape Henlopen Fishing Pier. Fish that have been caught at the pier this week include flounder, triggerfish and small sea bass. Logan Serpico pulled up a keeper flounder from the Cape Henlopen Fishing Pier. Adam Mays reeled up a triggerfish from the pier while using clams as bait. The Flounder Pounder Open is this weekend. From Aug.18-20, anglers can fish for a grand prize of $100,000. Paradise Marina & Short’s Marine are hosting the three-day tournament. Lines may enter the water at 7 a.m. and must be out by 5 p.m. Weigh-ins will start at 4 p.m. each day at the Paradise Lagoon Stage.

RIVERS

Anglers are catching a lot of white perch on the Delaware River in New Castle with bloodworms working the best. White perch are also getting caught in numbers in the Indian River near Millsboro. After last week’s 36-pound, 3.2-ounce state record blue catfish was caught, many anglers have taken to the water to top the monster cat. Although no records were reported this week, anglers caught plenty of catfish in the C&D Canal using bunker. Anglers searching for slot striper have found a few in the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal this week. Matt Garrison stopped into Lewes Harbour Marina with a keeper rockfish from the canal. A few flounder were also caught in the Lewes Canal. Sharon Rigney pulled in a keeper while using gulp and a jig head.

PONDS

I made my last trip of the summer up to Deering Lake in New Hampshire over the weekend. I finally got in on the smallmouth action up there switching back and forth between a brush hog, and a senko. I hooked up with several bass up to 3-pounds. I also hooked up with what might be the largest pickerel that I have laid my eyes upon. The fish grabbed my brush hog and dove down into a beaver dam before biting through my line. The monster pickerel then leaped out of the water as if to let me know that it had bested me — the previous week, I managed to catch several large pickerel in the lake. This upcoming weekend, I will turn my attention to the Brandywine River. In Delaware, anglers have been stopping into Taylored Tackle with good news from Hearns Pond. Largemouth bass ranging from 4-to-5 pounds have been caught on senko worms. Captain Bones reported decent bass action at Lums Pond, Garrisons Lake, and Silver Lake in Dover. Anglers are finding success using senkos and frogs.
