It's about to get much colder, and that could bring Delaware's first snow as early as Friday.

The forecast calls for highs of 48 degrees Wednesday, a 14-point drop from the early-afternoon temperatures in Wilmington Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

There is currently about a 30 percent chance of snowfall in the mid-Atlantic region Friday and Saturday, according to the NWS. But even if it doesn't snow, temperatures are about to drop sharply.

The drop-off is related to a cold front moving through the region between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, said NWS meteorologist Valerie Meola. Cold air from the north and the west are expected to follow behind the front, and the chill it'll bring should last until at least Dec. 12.

That makes the chances of snow on Friday and Saturday about 30 percent for the region, she said. An NWS forecast map shows there's a 37-45 percent chance there will be at least some snow Friday.

There's a chance this weekend will bring Delaware's first snows with cold weather arriving Wednesday.

"There's a couple of opportunities for precipitation to occur," Meola said.

It's still too early to guess at possible snowfall levels, she said, something usually done within 72 hours of the anticipated precipitation event. It will depend in part on how much moisture is in the air.
