Roadways in New Castle County were swamped with rainwater early Monday morning following a round of heavy rain which triggered a flash flood warning from forecasters.

High water on Centerville Road required a rescue early Monday morning after heavy rains doused the region and sparked flash flooding.

On Boxwood, Centerville and Graywell roads, as well as in other places, emergency responders have been answering calls from drivers stalled out by high water. The rain abated around 8 a.m., but the flood warning is still in effect and more rain is expected.

Some of the roads where the flooding came fastest are prone to flooding, such as Airport Road and Boxwood Road. Emergency personnel haven't reported any injuries Monday.

High water swamped Wagoner Drive near Elsmere early Monday morning.

The flash flood warning is in effect until 12:45 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Heavy rainfall is expected to fall over the region until Tuesday, NWS said.

NWS issued a flood warning for White Clay Creek near Newark and Christina River at Coochs Bridge around 8:30 a.m.

Several inches of rain could fall in some places throughout the region. Additional rainfall today of at least an inch or two is possible over the area, NWS said around 7 a.m.

A front is moving southward from the waters off New Jersey and Delaware, said the NWS station at Mt. Holly, New Jersey. It's not expected to move much through Tuesday.
