Horseback or cockpit, Winterthur or Monster Mile, seersucker or fire suit, if you're off to the races in Delaware Sunday, you're most likely going in the rain, forecasters predict.

Rainstorms are expected to sweep the state starting Saturday night and could last into Sunday afternoon. The statewide showers could bring as much as 1.5 inches of rain.

WEATHER:Flood watch in effect amidst heavy rain Sunday

Storms and showers already were popping up across Delaware Saturday, though they were isolated with regional daytime weather mostly just threatening rain. But rainfall is expected to get heavier as it gets later, especially after midnight, forecasters predicted.

The Point-to-Point steeplechase at Winterthur in northern New Castle County and the Gander RV 400 Monster Energy NASCAR cup series race events both are scheduled to go on Sunday. But fans at either race event shouldn't expect too much sunshine.

Between Saturday and Sunday afternoon, Dover may get 1 inch of rain and northern New Castle County may get 1.5 inches, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Jonathan O'Brien. Southern Delaware is expected to get slightly less rain.

Low visibility due to fog forced officials Saturday morning to cancel a practice for Sunday's NASCAR race at Dover International Speedway.

The heaviest rains there will be during the second half of Saturday night and Sunday morning before slowly tapering off Sunday afternoon, according to AccuWeather.

NASCAR races are usually delayed for inclement weather, at least until the track dries out. Sunday's race is scheduled for 2 p.m. Point-to-Point horse races run rain or shine.
