In some ways, it was a dark week in Delaware news, with stories about young people shot to death in a home invasion, a dismembered body found by a road and more. But there was also a firefighter who was badly hurt but pulled through and saw an outpouring of support. 

Here are some of our best stories from the past week:

The sandwich, the myth, the legend 

Capriotti's subs might seem like magic, but there's a lot of hard work behind that turkey craftsmanship. Ryan Cormier and photographer Jennifer Corbett got a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the iconic Bobbie (a Thanksgiving-themed sandwich made with turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing and mayo).

The university formerly known as the No. 1 party school

In response to complaints from residents, the city of Newark passed a law that will give police wide leeway to crack down on parties held by students at the University of Delaware. Student response was swift and passionate, with thousands signing a petition against the ordinance. One fraternity member argued that the law would tarnish the school's "rich history" of partying.

He thought he'd gotten lucky. He was wrong. 

Dover Downs casino paid out $2,164 on a sports bet to school bus driver Davell Golding. Then things turned sour: Golding ended up arrested, banned from the casino and fired from his bus-driving job.

Baby loses both parents in a home invasion

He was a football player for Dickinson High School. She was his girlfriend, excited to be a new mother. The teens were both shot dead in bed in what family members said was a home invasion, leaving behind a 3-month-old baby.

Murder charge dropped for last defendant in Wingo trial

Fifteen-year-old Bandon Wingo was shot in the head in 2016. Years later, the last defendant took a plea.

Hackers hold records of low-income children hostage

It was as if the cyberattackers were trying to find the most shameful way to make money they could — an attack on a mental health care provider for mostly low-income children and families.

There's something in the air

In some Delaware neighborhoods, where residents face challenges related to race and poverty, air pollution and the threat of industrial accidents are a sort of unwanted bonus.

A grisly crime rattles neighbors — and rumors spread 

A body found by the side of the road near Laurel is being investigated as a homicide, police said Monday.

Police found a body. That was bad enough. Then more details came out: The woman's name and the fact that her body had been found in pieces. And intensive police activity in a Laurel neighborhood, without information for the public, had rumors spreading about a connection to the case

Don't blame the refs that you lost

After high school teams lose games, sports reporter Kevin Tresolini is hearing a lot of complaints about referees. He's not impressed.

A firefighter in critical condition pulls through

When a century-old house in Mill Creek went up in flames, the blaze eagerly feeding on the old wood, firefighters rushed to the scene. One of them fell through the floor and got serious burns. He was in critical condition but rallied after treatment at a burn center. His friends rallied, too
