PHILADELPHIA − The Philadelphia Eagles doubled down at cornerback in the second round, trading up to No. 40 in order to select Iowa cornerback Cooper DeJean. This after picking Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell in the first round. The Eagles last used a first-round pick on a corner in 2002. That year, they drafted corners in the first two rounds. The Eagles gave up both second-round picks at No. 50 and 53, plus a fifth-round pick. In return, they also got a third-round pick (No. 78) and a fifth (No. 152). Here's our instant analysis:

Iowa defensive back Cooper DeJean (3) catches a punt at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, in Iowa City, Iowa. DeJean returned the punt for a touchdownm and it was later called back after review ruled he fair-caught the punt.

Iowa CB Cooper DeJean to Eagles NFL draft grade: Instant reaction

Grade: B+

Why: The Eagles made a bold move to trade up for DeJean. But DeJean, at 6-foot, 203 pounds, is coming off a fractured fibula. He didn't run at the combine or at his Pro Day, but he did have a private workout a few weeks before the draft. DeJean has versatility in that he can play both outside and inside at nickel, and that very well could be where he starts out. DeJean could have been a Round 1 pick, and he would've been taken had the Eagles waited.
